Memaw

June 1st.
The porch light flickered on, then off.
Was it a signal we missed?
We sat drinking iced coffee under bistro lights, young and happy.
Memaw was heading to bed.

June 2nd.
The first cosmos bloomed today.
Fragile, lovely, lifting face to sun,
Asking glory to shine down.
It’s a beautiful day to bloom.

Sirens brashly sing
Lights flash all around
Too close to be a mistake
Distress is in our neighborhood.

Firetruck, ambulance, one, then two, then three police come.
Mrs. Solomon stands as barefoot witness
Hearts in throats -
This is all for Memaw, our neighbor.

Her light has flickered off,
Fragile beauty lifts face to Son
Glory is all around her
It’s a beautiful day for resurrection.
