Memorial

We know him as “Boomer”, thanks to the OU bumper sticker on his big truck.
He is a recluse.
His yard is overgrown.
He has very few visitors.
He is disabled.
He is a Vietnam vet.

But yesterday, early in the morning, he placed a full sized American flag in the bed of his pick-up.
It hit me - for those who served, Memorial Day is exactly what the name means - a day of memory, a day of commemorating something or someone who was.
People lost. Friends gone. Scars received. Lives changed.

And this man - Boomer - he became so much more dimensional than the caricature I’d created.
